Most people know the movie “Legally Blonde” with Elle Woods and her little chihuahua, Bruiser. What you may not have noticed while watching the movie is that there are some major life lessons. Of course, I didn’t notice them when I first watched it, but recently I re-watched the movie, and Elle Woods shows us how to be strong, a good role model and true to yourself.
In the beginning of the movie, Elle is so caught up on Warner that she forgets who she is and what she really wants. However, it’s her infatuation for Warner that causes her to get into law school, which is a lot harder to do than one may think. When she gets there, she finds out that Warner is with another girl, and not just with her, but engaged to her. At that moment, Elle realizes that she doesn’t need Warner, and that’s the first lesson. She teaches us that you don’t need a boyfriend or girlfriend to be happy. She shows us determination and perseverance.
While Elle is in college, she is still put down by Vivian and other classmates, but she works really hard and shows that with hard work comes great success. Elle teaches us that if you want to accomplish something, the only person that can accomplish it is yourself. Putting in hard work can really make all the difference. Many of us have dreams, and unless we take action to turn those dreams into reality, they will always stay dreams. Even though Elle’s original plan was to not go to law school (I mean, she was majoring in fashion merchandise), once she had an idea of what she wanted to accomplish, she was able to do it.
Another very important life lesson Elle Woods taught us was the Bend and Snap. It ultimately never fails. Even if you snap too hard and break your crush’s nose, it still works. The Bend and Snap teaches us to feel comfortable in our own skin. The whole scene has so many different kinds of people: skinny, curvy, Caucasian, African American, Asian, short, and tall. Being comfortable in your own skin is so important.
Elle also teaches us also to be good people on the inside. She never jumped to conclusions about who was guilty. Brooke Taylor Windham was accused of murdering her husband, but Elle never doubted her for a second. During the case, she used her knowledge on perms and caused the true culprit to come to light. Elle shows us to stick to our gut instinct and stand up for what is right.
Even though Elle Woods is a fictional character, she shows us how to be better people, which I think is important for everyone to pay attention to. Even though this movie is a comedy, there are some great life lessons. If you haven’t seen the movie, I would definitely recommend it. As Elle Woods said, “You must have faith in people. And most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself.”
